The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah

I will be honest, I did not love The Great Alone when I first started reading it.  For those of you that have read Kristin Hannah, you know what a great writer she is, but the realness of her writing with the characters and their situation made it difficult to read.  Once I finally pulled up my big girl pants and set out to finish reading the book, I could not put it down.  I was emotionally wrecked and am longing to read the book over again.  Now that I have finished the book, I have determined that this is the best Kristin Hannah book I have read.

The story takes you through the story of Leni and her parents, Ernt and Cora Allbrite.  Ernt and Cora have an unconventional love story that started before Ernt went to Vietnam.  When he came back, he was a changed man that has difficulty handling his memories of Vietnam.  Ernt is not your everyday husband and father.  He is erratic.  He drinks too much.  He loves too hard.  And he is everything to both Leni and Cora.  That is until they move to a remote town in Alaska.  Here, his true self is revealed to Leni and we are left to see what will happen to this trio.  This is a long book, but it is a quick read that you won't want to put down
